Bollywood classic 3 Idiots is getting a sequel, with director Rajkumar Hirani confirming that the script is still being written and that the story will jump roughly 20 years ahead of the original film. Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi are expected to return, and Hirani said there will be no fourth lead character added to the trio. The sequel is set to leave behind the college and exam setting that defined the 2009 film. Instead, it will focus on the three main characters in middle age, dealing with issues such as marriage, children and a midlife crisis. Hirani said the project will only be discussed publicly in full once the script reaches the right stage. Writer Abhijat Joshi remains attached, and Aamir Khan has already read an early draft and agreed with the overall direction, according to the report. Indian media have also said Kareena Kapoor and Boman Irani may return if the sequel is formally greenlit. No production start date has been confirmed, and Hirani has not endorsed industry chatter that filming could begin in the second half of 2026.
